Extracting the Sound

Be aware that pretty much any cymbal can crack, especially if you do not follow the rules mentioned above. No matter how solid the instrument may look, it is not a sheet of stainless steel. It is very possible to get the maximum volume out of a cymbal without ever breaking it. As far as playing is concerned, this boils down to the difference between either extracting the sound from the cymbal or beating the sound out of it; between glancing the cymbal with a twist of your wrist or trying to cut through it in one straight blow.

I carry different sets of cymbals with me on the road—A’s, K’s Platinums and Z’s—so if one night I’m not hearing enough overheads, I can ask my drum tech to put on the Z’s to get more of a cutting sound.
